Darning needles are long and thick needles used mainly to do repair work on items with wool or thick yarn. They have long elongated eyes.

There are short darners and long darners. Children often learn to stitch with these when working on fabric other than Aida or Binca cloth as have a point to go through fabric but sturdy enough for their hands

The long darners are particularly useful if darning a large hole and need the length of the needle to span the distance of the repair. They are also good for working with heavy materials where a thicker and longer needle is needed or when stitching through several layers of fabric. Basting can be easily done with a long darner as well.

This page also includes needles that have very large eyes although not necessarily classed as darners.

Not sure how to darn!

The image on the left is a link to a 'YOU TUBE' short video clip showing you how to darn a sock and using a mushroom.

It is not made by us, but we felt it gives a nice demonstration how to do it.
