Darners are thickish needles used to sew with thicker threads such as cottons and wools. They have elongated eyes. There are short darners and long darners. Children often learn to stitch with these when working on fabric other than Aida or Binca cloth as have a point to go through fabric but sturdy enough for their hands

The long darners are particularly useful if darning a large hole and need the length of the needle to span the distance of the repair. They are also good for working with heavy materials where a thicker and longer needle is needed or when stitching through several layers of fabric. Basting can be easily done with a long darner as well.
